Before Indri, There Was Amrut

Indri is the current star, but Amrut Fusion is the Godfather. Here is the story of how Bangalore beat the Scotch barons first.

It is easy to cheer for Indian whisky today. But back in 2009, 'Indian Whisky' was a punchline in global bars. The world thought we only made molasses rum disguised as whisky. Then came Amrut Fusion. Produced in Bangalore, it didn't just compete; it dominated. When leading whisky critic Jim Murray rated it the 3rd Best Whisky in the World in 2010, the laughter stopped. Indri and Rampur might be running today, but they are running on the road Amrut built.

The Achievement: Rated 3rd Best Whisky in the World (2010)
The Innovation: A mix of Scottish and Indian barley
The ABV: A robust 50%

The 'Fusion' Concept

Why is it called Fusion? Because it was a diplomatic masterpiece in a bottle. Amrut took 75% unpeated barley grown at the foot of the Himalayas and fused it with 25% peated barley imported from Scotland.

EAST MEETS WEST

Indian Barley
Provides the fruity, tropical base notes.
Scottish Peat
Adds the smoky, complex finish.
The Result
A complex flavor bomb that bridges two continents.

The Jim Murray Shock

💡 97 OUT OF 100

In 2010, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible gave Amrut Fusion 97 points. He wrote that it 'has to be one of the great whiskies found anywhere in the world.' Overnight, stocks vanished from shelves globally.

Tasting Notes

  • •Nose: Heavy oak, barley sugar, and a faint whiff of smoke.
  • •Palate: Massive complexity. Coffee, dark chocolate, and fruit jam.
  • •Finish: Long, spicy, and marmalade-sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Amrut Fusion smoky?

Yes, but mildly. It uses peated Scottish barley, so it has a gentle wisp of smoke, not the heavy medicinal smoke of an Islay scotch like Laphroaig.

Why is it 50% ABV?

Most whiskies are diluted to 40% or 42.8%. Amrut keeps Fusion at 50% to preserve the oils and intensity of the flavor. It is meant to be sipped slowly.
