The Hoarding Mistake

Saving that standard bottle for a special occasion? You might be ruining it. Here is why spirits don't age like wine.

We all have that friend (or maybe it's you) hoarding a bottle of Black Label from 2010, convinced it's turning into Blue Label in the back of the cupboard. Stop it. You are looking like a rookie. Unlike wine, which is 'alive' and evolving in the bottle, distilled spirits are stable. Once removed from the wood barrel and sealed in glass, the aging process stops completely. That 12-year-old scotch will still be a 12-year-old scotch in 2050—just likely oxidized and flat.

The Hard Truth: Aging stops the second it leaves the wood barrel.
The Risk: Opened bottles oxidize and lose flavor within months.
The Rule: Drink it. Don't shrine it.

The Wine vs. Whisky Confusion

People confuse spirits with wine. Wine has active tannins and ferments that continue to evolve and improve in glass. Spirits are distilled; they are chemically stable at high ABV. Glass is inert. Nothing is happening inside that bottle.

💡 THE MATH IS SIMPLE

A 12-Year-Old Scotch bottled in 2000 is still a 12-Year-Old Scotch today. It is not a 36-Year-Old Scotch.

The Real Enemy: Air

While unopened bottles last indefinitely (if stored upright away from sunlight), opened bottles have a ticking clock. Once air gets in, oxidation begins. The subtle flavors evaporate, and the alcohol becomes harsh.

THE OPEN BOTTLE TIMELINE

Month 1-2
Peak condition. Minimal change.
Month 6
Noticeable loss of 'high notes' (fruit, floral).
Year 1+
Flat, cardboard-like taste. Still safe, just bad.

Frequently Asked Questions

My grandfather's old bottle tastes different though?

It tastes different because production methods were different back then, or the cork failed and it oxidized. It didn't 'improve' in the glass.

Should I store bottles on their side like wine?

NEVER. High alcohol eats away at the cork. If stored sideways, the cork will disintegrate into your whisky and the seal will fail. Always store upright.
