Plain vodka is what most people picture when they hear 'vodka' — clear, neutral, distilled spirit with no flavour additions. The Russian and Polish vodka traditions emphasise this style; flavoured vodkas are seen as a relatively modern (and controversial) innovation. Plain vodka shouldn't be flavourless, however. The base ingredient (wheat, rye, potato, grape, or corn) imparts subtle character — wheat vodkas are clean and crisp, potato vodkas are creamy and full-bodied, grape vodkas (like Cîroc) carry a delicate fruit note. Premium plain vodkas (Belvedere, Grey Goose, Beluga) showcase these subtle differences clearly.

The differences come from distillation, filtration, and water quality. Premium plain vodkas are distilled multiple times (3–7 passes), filtered through better materials (charcoal, quartz, even diamond dust as marketing), and diluted with carefully selected water. The result: cleaner finish, less harshness, fewer congeners (impurities that contribute to hangovers). Standard plain vodkas are distilled once or twice, filtered minimally, and use whatever water source is convenient. The flavour difference can be subtle when neat but becomes obvious in cocktails — a Martini with Belvedere tastes noticeably different from one with budget vodka.
